|| GUEST LECTURES HELD ||

Mr. Tess Murton, Social Worker from Melbourne, Australia, accompanied by his wife Ms. Wendy Dowell, a Dental Therapist,   and Dr. Fr.John Vatta Mattom, Executive Director, Sangamitra (NGO) visited college on 11-3-2005.  Dr. Murton addressed the students and staff on the scope and job opportunities of professional social workers in Australia.

 Ms. K. Pallavi, Manager, Mobile unit and Ms. Jocelyn Wyatt , Business Development Consultant,   from SCOJO Foundation visited college on July 22, 2005. They informed us about the Foundation and its goals. Its main aim is to develop local distribution channels for affordable reading glasses and facilitate access to comprehensive eye care.

 Mr. J.N. Kaul, Founder President, SOS Children’s Villages of India, visited college in February 2006. He gave a detailed presentation of the conception of the SOS villages and its activities.

Dr. Andreas D. Souza, Director, Henry Martin Institute,  Hyderabad along with his team  organized a one day session on peace and communal harmony. The session was informative and thought provoking.

 Ms. Vatsala, Lead Volunteer from Centre for Social Initiative and Management approached the college to explore on the possibilities of membership of students to facilitate their participation in their programmes and activities. In one of their programmes to award Excellence in Social Service to Social Entrepreneurs   on Feb 18, 2006, our PG students presented a cultural programme which was highly appreciated.

As Treasurer of National Association of Professional Social Workers in India, which is for social work educators and practitioners, addressed students and staff, highlighting the importance of the Association and its Activities. He motivated everybody to become members of the Association.

|| Film shows ||

Two educative films on Social Work were screened at college. The first one was ‘Swas’ which was based on the struggles and ground realities of a medico social worker placed in a hospital. The second one was ‘Ammu’ which was based on the experiences of a reporter while investigating the after effects of Delhi riots.

|| ORIENTATION COURSE ON QUALITATIVE RESEARCH - APPROACHES AND ISSUES ||

March   6 to 8, 2006.

A three day orientation course on Qualitative Research was conducted by the Research centre. Dr.D.K.Lal Das was the Director and Mrs.Vanila Bhaskaran, was the Co-ordinator of the course.

The participants enhanced NGO functions, teachers and Research scholars from social work and social sciences disciplines.

The objective of the course was to orient the participants to the Qualitative approach of research and to explore them the foundations on which the entire approach risk. And to help them learn and apprise the methods, tools, and the type of analysis, specific to D.R. the participants were also taught to use the computer for analysis qualitative data.

Resource persons were drawn from among the faculty as well as from the H.C.U.

|| A  Two – Day NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON “CHILDREN AT RISK” ||

The chief guest Dr. S.Jelani Regional Head, SERO, UGC, inaugurated the programme and delivered his speech highlighting the role of Juvenile Boards & Courts and also suggested measures to eradicate bonded child labour.
 
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. P.D. Samson, VIVA   Network for children at risk, South East Asia.

|| COURSE ON QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS IN SOCIAL SCIENCES ||

A course on Quantitative Analysis in Social Sciences was conducted by the Research cell from Aug 26 to Sept  2005.   The Director of the course was Dr.DK.Lal Das and the Co- ordinator was Mrs. Vanila Bhaskeran

The participants included teachers and research scholars from the departments of social work and social sciences of different institutions of the country. Resource persons were  the faculty of the college and Dr.D.K.Lal Das, Director Research Centre.

The course was well attended and appreciated. Most of the participants expressed that such courses should be conducted regularly as they are very helpful to teachers, researchers and participants, as the college has the expertise and facilities.


|| STUDENTS ACTIVITIES ||

SIGNATURE CAMPAIGN AGAINST GIRL CHILD LABOUR

The social work students and the faculty of Roda Mistry College of Social Work & Research Centre have formed a cell to actively work for the abolition of Domestic Child Labour.

As a part of the activity of this Cell, the students of the college propose to share, publicize and muster support to fight against  Child Labour. On a wider canvas. To realize these, A National Convention of Students of Social Work in India is mooted. The students with the help of the faculty of the college conducted “SIGNATURE CAMPAIGNS” ,  on Child Rights Day Nov 20 and  on Human Rights Day. Dec 10 2005.

Aims and Objectives of the Signature Campaign

  • To create awareness on Domestic Child Labour among General public.
  • To help the suffering child who is working “behind the closed doors”
  • To encourage Public not to employ “Girl Child Labour”.
  • To help every child realize their rights….

There was a positive response from the public. Many came forward and signed on the banner as well as in the signature registers, expressing their support to the campaign and concern for the child labourers.

|| TWO DAY WORKSHOP ON "HIV/AIDS &TRAFFICKING IN WOMEN &GIRLS" ||

The Roda Mistry College of Social Work and Research Centre (ICSW A.P) Affiliated to Osmania University in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Andhra Pradesh. State Aids Control Society (APSACS) National Aids Control Organization (NACO) and Department of Women and Child Development, New Delhi Organized a two day workshop to address the issues of Trafficking and HIV in women and girls. The broader goal of the workshop is to explore the strategies in effectively incorporating the above into teaching, research and extension work in the Universities of Andhra Pradesh.

It is against this backdrop that the Roda Mistry College of Social Work and Research Centre, ICSW-A.P branch, affiliated to Osmania University, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Andhra Pradesh State Aids Control Society (APSACS), National Aids Control Organization (NACO) and Department of Women and Child Development, New Delhi is organizing a two day workshop to address the trafficking and HIV in women and girls. The broader goal of the Workshop is to explore the strategies in effectively incorporating the above into teaching, research and extension work.

The Workshop was held on January 23rd &  24, 2006 at the Indian School of Business, Gachibowli, Hyderabad.

The workshop was A.P. Legislative Assembly inaugurated by the Hon’ble speaker Mr.K.Suresh Reddy. The Key Note Address was delivered by Mr.Michale Saint lot State Representative of UNICEF. Prof. A.M Pathan, Vice Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University Presided over the session Mrs.Damayanthi., Project Director of APSACS and Mr Ahmed Salman, UNDP National Co-ordinate above spoke.

The workshop was well attended.  The participants comprised of Professors, Chairpersons of Board of Studies and Subject Experts of different disciplines like sociology, Sociology, Social Work, Communications, Anthropology, Gender studies, Law, Education from Osmania University, Andhra University, B.R.Ambedkar Open University, Srikrishna Devaraya University, Maulana Azad  National Urdu University, Hyderabad Central University, Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswavidyalayam, S.V. University and University of Aixen  Provence, France.

There was also a good representation of Non-Governmental Organisation’s working in the field of trafficking and HIV in women and girls.

|| Students also conducted health camp ||

A General Health Camp was conducted by the students of BSW II year (2007-08) on
9th September, 2007 at Izzatnagar weaker section colony near Hitex, Hyderabad.
The camp was inaugurated by Mr.PJanardhan Reddy (Khairtabad Constituency
M.LA) and attended by the Deputy Commissioner of Serilingampally Municipality
and other dignitaries.
          
The camp was conducted in collaboration with an International NGO named Down to earth Down to us and the doctors from Gandhi HospitaT"7 Hyderabad. Around 300 people benefited from the camp. Mr.Ram Mohan Reddy, Mr.Manoj Kumar, Mr.Sai Srinivas, Mr.Rajini Prakash and Mr. Vinay Chandra Mohan were the students who initiated the camp , as part of their field work training under the supervision of Mrs.Renuka

|| THE NATIONAL SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS' CONFERENCE ||

The students of the college in association with OXFAM (India) TRUST, HYDERABAD AND MV FOUNDATION, HYDERABAD organised a National Social Work Students' Conference from 18 - 20 Jan, 2007, titled PRABHAV - MAKE AN IMPACT - to deliberate on the twin themes of CHILD LABOUR AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN INDIA. Dr.B.VJagadish, Associate Professor was the Director of the Conference.

The broad objectives of the conference were:

1. An in-depth understanding & sharing of concerns among the Social Work Student Community on Child Labour and Domestic Violence against Women

2.  To develop a National strategy of action to be adopted by the students of all Social Work Colleges to deal effectively in abolishing Child Labour & Domestic Violence against Women.

Hon'ble Justice Sri Ramakrishna Raju, Former Justice of A.P. High Court, Member of A.P. State Human Rights Commission delivered the keynote address.Certificates of participation, Paper presentations and Mementos were presented to the student delegates by the Chief Guest. Prof.Rekha Pandey, Director of Women's Studies of Moulana Azad National Urdu University and Sri Basheer Mohd Khan, Chairman, Board of Management, Roda Mistry College of Social Work & Research Centre-Mr.Varun, organizing secretary of the conference proposed the vote of thanks.
It is hoped that the conclusion of the conference is not the end but the beginning of a new dawn of student social action.

A lecture on "SCOPE OF HUMAN RESOURCE AND MANAGEMENT TODAY" was held
on 04.08.07 Mr. S.V. Rama Chandra Rao, MSW, B.L, H, R Consultant of Resource Input Limited (H.R. Solicitor Service Providerjfjfounder Secretary of H.R. Network of AP. He delivered a lecture on placement opportunities in the field of Human Resource Management. He addressed and inspired the students of BSW and MSW to take up the professional challenges of Social Work in general and challenges in H.R field in particular.


|| TRAINING PROGRAMME ON HIV/AIDS COUNSELLING ||

In collaboration with A.P State Aids Control Society and Lepra Society, the College has organized four Training Programmes for the newly inducted Counsellors working with people living with HIV/AlDs (PLWHA) at the ICCTCs.

The Training was held at the Roda Mistry College for duration of 2 weeks. Resource Persons, drawn from the College, delivered lectures and skill demonstration sessions on HIV/AIDs Counselling to a group of 50 Counsellors from the state of Andhra Pradesh.

|| EXTENSION LECTURES ||

A Lecture on "COMMUNICATION SKILLS" - by Mr.SHANTANU CHATERJEE, Director, ENGLISH EDGE, Himayatnagar, Hyderabad held in Feb.2007

Dr.Shashikala Singh, Reader in English, Roda Mistry College of Social Work & Research Centre, introduced the Speaker Mr.Shantanu Chaterjee, Director, English Edge. Mr.Chaterjee addressed a gathering of BSW and MSW students highlighting the need and importance of "Communication Skills" in English. He stressed the need of English Language Teaching programmes through multimedia, using audio and video clips which adds excitement to learning. He also emphasized soft skills for communication and speech enhancement training for students.

Mr.Simon Raj, student of BSW thanked Mr.Shantanu for his brilliant and dynamic insights into the English Language. Dr.Anna Mathew, Principal, presented a momento to the Speaker.
                            
A lecture on "Peace and People's Rights and Communal Harmony" by Dr.Asgar All Engineer, Eminent Activist & Campaigner, Director - Centre for Studies on Secularism and Society (CSS, Mumbai).

This Lecture was organized by the College on August 24, 2007 at 10.30 a.m. in the college campus. The Chief Guest, Dr.Asgar Alt Engineer was felicitated by Mr.Basheer Mohd. Khan, Chairman, Board of Management, RMCSW& RC. The other members of the Management, Mr. Naqui Ahmed and Mr.Hashim Syed were also present. The Principal, Dr.Anna Mathew welcomed the gathering and introduced the Speaker.
Dr.Asgar Ali Engineer highlighted the need for national integration and secularism. The staff and students, and representatives of various NGO's were enlightened by his profound analysis of people's rights and his focus on peace and communal harmony.

A lecture on "HIV/AIDS - Awareness & Social Work Intervention" by Mr.Arun Raj, Director,Global Organization for Development (GOD), Hyderabad, on August 18, 2007.

Mrs.Vanila Bhaskaran , Faculty Member, introduced the speaker who is the Alumnus of the College.

Mr.Arun Raj covered aspects like causes, prevention and effects of HIV/AIDS and the role of a social worker. He addressed the issue of AIDS orphans and talked about the work done by GOD in the area of AIDS orphans and community involvement. The students were educated on the various problems faced by PLWHAs and the intervention strategies to handle them. Mr. Avinash, a student of BSW III year proposed a vote of thanks.
