International Women’s Day -March 8, 2009

International Women’s Day was observed  by the students of the College.  The P.G. students organised several activities like, group discussion, paper  presentations , role plays and skits .Opinions and views were  expressed  by students and teachers on several issues relating to women.

There was a cross-section of opinions expressed by teachers and students.  A general consensus was that women’s issues need to be addressed by involving men as partners and that we should to be working together for solving mutual problems and enhancing the well being of each other for the benefit of  the society.

World Alzheimer’s Day – September 21,2008

The day was marked by  paper  presentations  by the students of Medical and Psychiatric specialisation of MSW II year on creating awareness on Alzheimer's, of its symptoms, causes and consequences.

The sessions were enlightening as it created awareness, disseminated knowledge on the subject of Alzheimer's. It also generated interaction and participation among the students and staff. The role and the importance  of a Psychiatric Social Worker were discussed at length.

College Day

The College day was celebrated on 21 Feb. 2009.  The Chief Guest of the occasion was Mrs.Nagaveni, Commissioner, Serilingampally Municipality and presided by our Chairman Mr.Basheer Mohd Khan.

Mrs.Nagaveni, in her address, advised the students to practice what they have learnt as social workers.  She emphasized on the relevance and importance of social work profession in the present global situation of economic instability. She showed a high regard for social work profession and she strongly felt that the profession will continue to thrive even during the hard times of economic instability.

Prizes were awarded to the students who won the inter-class and individual competitions in skit, elocution, essay writing, singing, games and sports that were held over the academic year 2007-2008.

Teachers Day

It has been a tradition for students to felicitate the teachers on Teachers Day which is celebrated on 5 Sept. every year.  This year too the students organized an entertainment programme, as a mark of respect to the teachers.  The teachers reciprocated by giving advice and thanking them for the gesture.

  • Linto Manuel of BSW. III Year attended an International Conference from Nov.   26-28, 2008 on “Social Development and Transition: Paths for Global Local Partnership” held at Kathmandu, Nepal.  It was hosted by the Dept. of Social Work, Kadambari Memorial College, Kathmandu, Nepal.
  • BSW. II year students participated in a conference on “Social Transformation and Rural Development: Challenges for Social Work” organized by Dept of Social Work, DNR College, Bhimavaram, A.P. from 7-9 Feb. 2009, held at Bhimavaram.The students who participated in the Conference are Pavan, Yuvraj
  • A conference on Human Rights  and Disaster Management organized by Madras Christian College, Chennai was attended by  Ms Akruthi and Yuvraj, students of BSW II Year.

Students on Exchange Programme

Eighteen students from Sweden visited College in October 2008.  They were here on an exchange programme hosted by the Henry Martin Institute, Shivrampally.   They had  a good interaction with our PG students where-in they shared their professional experiences and educational interests.

Extra-Mural Lecture

Mr.M.A.Shakeel, Advocate and Co-ordinator – Law Network on HIV/AIDs gave a lecture on Human Rights and Law in Feb.2009. He addressed issues relating to HIV/AIDS and the significance of the Law network.  He enlightened the audience on the role of law and how it can help PLHA's in several aspects of their lives.

Retirement

Mr.P.Narsimha Reddy, Lecturer in Physical Education attained superannuation in May 2008.  He has served the institution for over 30 years.  During his tenure, the Sports and Games Department had achieved several laurels for the College.  Students have participated and won several Championships like Boxing, Caroms, Weight lifting and had been runners up at the University level in several team tournaments also.

Mr.P.Narsimha Reddy was selected as a Coach and Manager several times, wherein he accompanied the teams to different states representing the O.U. teams.

The College has   reappointed Mr.P.Narsimha Reddy and he  continues his services as the Head of  the  Sports Department.

Admission of Students

BSW Course has been attracting students from different parts of the African Continent like Somalia, Nigeria, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Eritrea.  For the past five years several students from these countries have sought admission for the course. Presently a total of 38 foreign students are on the rolls  of the BSW Degree Programme.

Students from other states of the country also have sought admission into BSW Course..  This year we have students from Bihar, Manipur and West Bengal.

These students are encouraged to learn the local languages like Hindi and Telugu as it would help them in Field Work.  Students have shown a keen interest and many of them have learnt to speak.

English Communication Lab

The University has introduced Computer Based Teaching (CBT) in English at the undergraduate level.  An English lab has been started by the College  wherein students learn both listening comprehension and communication skills.  Students are examined in both listening and communication and marks are allotted for the same.

Co-Curricular Activities
  • BSW III year students who have been placed for field work at M.N.J. Cancer Hospital, Palliative Care Unit participated in a  Medical Exhibition organized by the Osmania Medical College at Koti.  Several other students from I & II year also attended and participated in all the programmes.
  • Mr.Avinash, who completed BSW in 2008, got admission into MA(Social Work) at Tata Institute of Social Sciences,(TISS) Mumbai.  We appreciate his efforts and congratulate him for making us proud. This year,2009  two students Ms Swathi and Ms Shalini have been admitted into TISS,Mumbai
  • Dr.D.K.Lal Das, Director, Research Cell, completed a Research Project on “Evaluation of the scheme of Assistance to Voluntary Organisations to provide Care of Older Persons in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra”, sponsored by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, New Delhi
Guest Lectures Held

Mr. Tess Murton, Social Worker from Melbourne, Australia, accompanied by his wife Ms. Wendy Do well, a Dental Therapist,   and Dr. Fr.John Vatta Mattom, Executive Director, Sangamitra (NGO) visited college on 11-3-2005.  Dr. Murton addressed the students and staff on the scope and job opportunities of professional social workers in Australia.

Ms. K. Pallavi, Manager, Mobile unit and Ms. Jocelyn Wyatt , Business Development Consultant,   from SCOJO Foundation visited college on July 22, 2005. They informed us about the Foundation and its goals. Its main aim is to develop local distribution channels for affordable reading glasses and facilitate access to comprehensive eye care.

Mr. J.N. Kaul, Founder President, SOS Children’s Villages of India, visited college in February 2006. He gave a detailed presentation of the conception of the SOS villages and its activities.

Dr. Andreas D. Souza, Director, Henry Martin Institute, Hyderabad along with his team  organized a one day session on peace and communal harmony. The session was informative and thought provoking.

Ms. Vatsala, Lead Volunteer from Centre for Social Initiative and Management approached the college to explore on the possibilities of membership of students to facilitate their participation in their programmes and activities. In one of their programmes to award Excellence in Social Service to Social Entrepreneurs   on Feb 18, 2006, our PG students presented a cultural programme which was highly appreciated.

Prof. Sanjay Bhatt, Department of Social Work, University of Delhi. As Treasurer of National Association of Professional Social Workers in India, which is for social work educators and practitioners, addressed students and staff, highlighting the importance of the Association and its Activities. He motivated everybody to become members of the Association.

Film shows

Two educative films on Social Work were screened at college. The first one was ‘Swas’ which was based on the struggles and ground realities of a medico social worker placed in a hospital. The second one was ‘Ammu’ which was based on the experiences of a reporter while investigating the after effects of Delhi riots.

Orientation Course On Qualitative Research -
  Approach and Issues

A three day orientation course on Qualitative Research was conducted by the Research centre. Dr.D.K.Lal Das was the Director and Mrs.Vanila Bhaskaran, was the Co-ordinator of the course.

The participants enhanced NGO functions, teachers and Research scholars from social work and social sciences disciplines.

The objective of the course was to orient the participants to the Qualitative approach of research and to explore them the foundations on which the entire approach risk. And to help them learn and apprise the methods, tools, and the type of analysis, specific to D.R. the participants were also taught to use the computer for analysis qualitative data.

Resource persons were drawn from among the faculty as well as from the H.C.U.

A  Two – Day National Conference On "Children At Rist"

The chief guest Dr. S.Jelani Regional Head, SERO, UGC, inaugurated the programme and delivered his speech highlighting the role of Juvenile Boards & Courts and also suggested measures to eradicate bonded child labour.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. P.D. Samson, VIVA   Network for children at risk, South East Asia

Course On Quantitative Analysis In Social Sciences

A course on Quantitative Analysis in Social Sciences was conducted by the Research cell from Aug 26 to Sept  2005.   The Director of the course was Dr.DK.Lal Das and the Co- ordinator was Mrs. Vanila Bhaskeran

The participants included teachers and research scholars from the departments of social work and social sciences of different institutions of the country. Resource persons were  the faculty of the college and Dr.D.K.Lal Das, Director Research Centre.

The course was well attended and appreciated. Most of the participants expressed that such courses should be conducted regularly as they are very helpful to teachers, researchers and participants, as the college has the expertise and facilities.

Students Activities
Signature Campaign Against Girl Child Labour
Faculty Advisor: Dr.B.V.Jagadish

The social work students and the faculty of Roda Mistry College of Social Work & Research Centre have formed a cell to actively work for the abolition of Domestic Child Labour.

As a part of the activity of this Cell, the students of the college propose to share, publicize and muster support to fight against  Child Labour. On a wider canvas. To realize these, A National Convention of Students of Social Work in India is mooted. The students with the help of the faculty of the college conducted “SIGNATURE CAMPAIGNS” , on Child Rights Day Nov 20 and  on Human Rights Day. Dec 10 2005. Aims and Objectives of the Signature Campaign

  • To create awareness on Domestic Child Labour among General public.
  • To help the suffering child who is working “behind the closed doors”
  • To encourage Public not to employ “Girl Child Labour”.
  • To help every child realize their rights….

There was a positive response from the public. Many came forward and signed on the banner as well as in the signature registers, expressing their support to the campaign and concern for the child labourers.

Two Day Workshop on "Hiv/Aids & Trafficking In
Women & Girls"

The Roda Mistry College of Social Work and Research Centre (ICSW A.P) Affiliated to Osmania University in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Andhra Pradesh. State Aids Control Society (APSACS) National Aids Control Organization (NACO) and Department of Women and Child Development, New Delhi Organized a two day workshop to address the issues of Trafficking and HIV in women and girls. The broader goal of the workshop is to explore the strategies in effectively incorporating the above into teaching, research and extension work in the Universities of Andhra Pradesh.

It is against this backdrop that the Roda Mistry College of Social Work and Research Centre, ICSW-A.P branch, affiliated to Osmania University, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Andhra Pradesh State Aids Control Society (APSACS), National Aids Control Organization (NACO) and Department of Women and Child Development, New Delhi is organizing a two day workshop to address the trafficking and HIV in women and girls. The broader goal of the Workshop is to explore the strategies in effectively incorporating the above into teaching, research and extension work.

The Workshop was held on January 23rd &  24, 2006 at the Indian School of Business, Gachibowli, Hyderabad.

The workshop was A.P. Legislative Assembly inaugurated by the Hon’ble speaker Mr.K.Suresh Reddy. The Key Note Address was delivered by Mr.Michale Saint lot State Representative of UNICEF. Prof. A.M Pathan, Vice Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University Presided over the session Mrs.Damayanthi., Project Director of APSACS and Mr Ahmed Salman, UNDP National Co-ordinate above spoke.

The workshop was well attended.  The participants comprised of Professors, Chairpersons of Board of Studies and Subject Experts of different disciplines like sociology, Sociology, Social Work, Communications, Anthropology, Gender studies, Law, Education from Osmania University, Andhra University, B.R.Ambedkar Open University, Srikrishna Devaraya University, Maulana Azad  National Urdu University, Hyderabad Central University, Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswavidyalayam, S.V. University and University of Aixen  Provence, France.

There was also a good representation of Non-Governmental Organisation’s working in the field of trafficking and HIV in women and girls.

Indian Society of Professional Social Work

Participated in Indian Society of Professional Social Work (ISPSW) XXVIII Annual National Conference and Presented a scientific paper on Psychosocial Needs of Caregivers of Neuro-Surgery Patients, was judged as a best scientific paper in the field of disability, and received Gold medal, 2010.

Presented a seminar topic on Solution Focused therapy. And planning to publish this review article.

Retirement

The office – Assistant Mr.M. Om Prakash retired in June 2009. A farewell party was hosted for him in the college in the presence of the Members of Management , Principal and Staff of college.

The Office – Superintendent Mr.Seshasai, retired in December’2009. The college hosted a ‘Farewell Party’ which  was attended by the Members of the Management and staff of the college. In a rare gesture Mr.Seshasai hosted a get-together  which was appreciated by the Management and Staff.

Felicitation

The new members of the ICSW Executive committee and Board of Management of  the College was constituted. The Principal and staff felicitated the new members in January’2010.

The Citizens Council of AP felicitated the Principal Dr.Anna Mathew with Mother Theresa Award for her outstanding contribution to the society in August’2009.

Mr. Pavan Subramanyam Chary, who completed BSW in April’2010, got admission into the MSW course 2010  at TISS, Mumbai, after a rigorous entrance test and other admission formalities.
