UGC SPONSORED TWO- DAY NATIONAL SEMINAR ON
"SOCIAL WORK AND GERONTOLOGY – ISSUES AND INTERVENTIONS"
MARCH 30-31, 2017
About the Seminar
With the growing population of elderly, the ageing of society is a global phenomenon. The population over the age of 60 has tripled in the last fifty years not only in our country but worldwide. It is likely to increase in the near future with the projected life expectancy at birth increasing, indicating better quality of life in general. Gerontology as the study of ageing and older persons evolved as a multidisciplinary concept as longevity has improved. The Process of Ageing and the changes that accompany it has prompted Scientists, Social Scientists, Biologists and humanists to study, research and understand the aged in society.
Social Gerontology as a sub field of gerontology focuses on the Psycho-social and Emotional aspects of growing old along with physical ageing. In most fundamental ways Social and emotional functioning does not decline with age. The need to feel embedded in a larger Social group does not lessen at any point in life. At the same time it recognises that older adults have distinct characteristics that can be differentiated from the earlier stages of adulthood.
Social Work as a practice based discipline works in the area of Geriatric care encompassing a broad range of functions. The multi- faceted field of Geriatric Social Work involves meeting their needs through a variety of professional roles. It understands and addresses the Social, Emotional, Psychological, Environmental and personal needs of people as they age. Promoting the concept of Active and Healthy ageing among the elderly includes preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative aspects of health, according to the National Program for the Health Care of the Elderly. (NPHCE)
As India still has family as the primary care giver to the elderly, strengthening of the value system will support the care giving delivery system in the country. There is an increasing need for strengthening the professional services provided by various professions in general and social work profession in particular.
Addressing such issues within a broad framework the objective of the seminar is to bring in academicians , practitioners , care givers and experts to disseminate knowledge and strategies of intervention in the study , research ,practice and strengthening of professional services to the elderly.
